Rhythm & Blues is a term used to describe the blues-influenced form of music predominantly performed by African-Americans since the late 1930s. The term “Rhythm and Blues” was first introduced into the American lexicon in the late 1940s: The name’s origin was created for use as a musical marketing term by Billboard magazine. In 1949, then-Billboard magazine reporter Jerry Wexler (who later went on to become a music producer) created the term for Billboard to designate upbeat popular music performed by African American artists that combined Blues and Jazz.
The “Rhythm & Blues” term was created to replace the designation “race music,” which until then was the standard catch-all phase used in reference to most music made by blacks at the time. After the “race music” term was deemed offensive, Billboard began using the Rhythm & Blues name that Wexler created.
The meaning behind the name is this: the “rhythm”part comes from the music’s typical dependence upon four-beat measures or bars and employs a backbeat (beats two and four accented in each measure). The “blues” portion came from the lyrics and melodies of the songs, which were often sad or “blue” during the music’s emergence in the World War II era. Over time the name was shortened to R&B as a matter of convenience.
By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was being used as a blanket term to describe soul and funk as well. Today, the term can be used to loosely define most African-American urban music, even though soul and funk can be placed in categories of their own.

Classic Soul Radio 100 Must Have Reggae Recordings
Background: Reggae – Around 1960, in the slums of Kingston Jamaica, where the local bands were playing a musical mixture of American R&B, Caribbean, and pan-African sounds, drummers began to emphasize the afterbeat, the 2nd and 4th beats (4/4 time) in unison with the piano and guitar while the bass played walking quarter notes. The musicians called the sound “Upside-down R&B”. It soon became known as “Ska”. As time passed Ska slowed the beat, lost its brass sound and morphed into “Rocksteady”, performed with fewer musicians and using more harmony vocals. Around 1968 the influences of Rastafari and Africanism along with political and social unrest in Jamaica gave birth to “Reggae”, with a slower, stripped-down, less “Pop-like” sound often with accents added on the 3rd beat. Today the term “Reggae” applies broadly to all the Jamaican born music that contains the original afterbeat rhythm.
Criteria: This top 200 songs list contains the classic Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Dancehall and Dub songs from Jamaica along with newer songs from Reggae artists in the U.K., U.S. and Africa. Rankings are based on initial and lasting popularity as well as influence and impact in Reggae music.
(Note: These are Reggae songs by Reggae artists. Not the occasional reggae song recorded by non-reggae artists.)
